The botanicals used in Greenall’s gin do more than simply give it its unique flavour; some of them have other associations as well.

Coriander

The ancient Chinese believed coriander to have the power of immortality.

Angelica

Known as “the root of the Holy Ghost”, it was considered a talisman against evil spirits.

Cassia

A traditional ingredient to aid digestion.

Cinnamon

Traditional associations of purification.

Lemon

Lemon with its high vitamin C content also has mythical association to love, friendship, purification and longevity.

Liquorice

As long ago as the third century BC, liquorice was used as a treatment for coughs.

Nutmeg

In folklore, nutmeg was associated with psychic powers.

Orris

Traditionally, three leaves of the orris seeds flower (the iris) symbolise faith, wisdom and valour.

And finally…Juniper

The principal botanical ingredient in gin. It was burned in temples as part of ancient purification rites.
